Child at Heart

March 18th, 2011 Posted in Uncategorized

I have always known that I am a geek at heart. Anyone who gets to know me thinks I am a total nerd. My favorite movies of all times are the Star Wars trilogies (yes, both of them) and my favorite books are Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia and Twilight. Yes, I secretly believe that these fantasy fiction stories are true stories of a world hidden from muggles, but I didn’t put two and two together until I saw these pictures and I realized: I am truly child at heart.

Most people would look at these pictures and think, ‘That’s cool, I would have loved that as a child.’ Or they say, ‘I’ll buy that for my kids one day.’ I, however, would want to own any of these things for my 23-year-old self!

Joni Niemelä Nature Photography

Joni Niemelä claims to be an amature photographer. He could have fooled me with these amazing photos of nature taken in his home of Finland. These macro photography pictures were all taken in  RAW-mode and then edited in a lightroom. I have to say, even though I am very sick of Minnesota’s winter, the way he captures the winter season so beautifuly, it makes me wish I was wherever these were taken.

Capturing “Serenity” in Lagos, Portugal

January 30th, 2011 Posted in Uncategorized

Whenever I look at these photos I took when I hiked with my sister up a cliff that looked over the Atlantic Ocean in the southern coastal City of Lagos in Portugal, I recall the serene feeling I had in the moment I took them. The day was perfect for taking pictures, and the natural lighting in combination with the “color accent” feature on my camera that shoots in black and white but captures selective colors allowed me to take some really unique pictures. Lagos is one of the most beautiful beach towns I have ever been to, unfortunately when I went in March of 2008, it wasn’t exactly beach weather. I would love to go back and see it in the summer. These pictures can give you an idea of just how pretty the coast is.

My Favorite Drawing

In my high school art class we were given a project to crop a small section of a photo and draw the section on a large scale. I have always loved history and politics, so it’s not surprising the photo that caught my attention was a photo I found in a Life magazine of JFK and his daughter, Caroline playing in the yard.

This photo is from Everything Jackie

I chose the segment of the photo that shows the most movement. I can remember when I was a kid and the feeling of excitement when I was thrown in the air. I also now have a one year old niece and love seeing the happiness on her face when she is lifted in the air the way Caroline is by her father in this photo. As someone who loves history and politics I am familiar with JFK as a politician but I love the human side that shows through in this photo as well as the obvious love for his daughter. This drawing was done with vine charcoal and has become my favorite drawing.

Note: the original magazine photo of JFK and Caroline used for the drawing was actually a mirror image of the photo shown. I no longer have the magazine photo, so this is a photo that I found on another blog.
